Scottsdale Sinus and Allergy Center is taking 'a comprehensive approach' by using in-office CT scans

Scottsdale Sinus and Allergy Center is using computerized tomography (CT) technology to diagnose sinus issues in patients suffering from symptoms of chronic sinusitis.

The center focuses on ear, nose and throat issues but is dedicated to treating sinus and nasal disorders as well.

“Our philosophy here is to really take a comprehensive approach to make sure that patients are correctly diagnosed in all facets of the disease process that are affecting their quality of life. So we want to make sure that we address and diagnose structural issues, infectious or inflammatory issues, as well as the allergy component, because all of those issues contribute to the disease process and the issues that they're having with their nose and their sinuses,” Dr. Brian Lee of Scottsdale Sinus and Allergy Center said.

CT scans combine X-ray images and computer processing to create images of bones, blood vessels and soft tissues, providing more detailed scans than simple X-rays do, according to Mayo Clinic. Generally, CT scans are used to determine internal injuries from collisions and trauma, but they can also be used to take images of nearly any body part.

One drawback of CT scans is that they do expose the subject to more radiation than they would receive with an X-ray, as CTs collect more detailed imaging, but the exposure to such radiation has not been proven to cause any long-term health effects. The benefits outweigh the risks from information gained during CT scans.
