What You Should Know About Sinus Infection
Your face houses a system of hollow “cavities,” which are your sinuses, located near your cheekbones and lower forehead. Your sinuses contain mucus and work to moisten the air that you breathe and flush out bacteria. These cavities can become blocked and inflamed, causing sinusitis (a sinus infection).
When your sinuses are inflamed and blocked, this can lead to a variety of symptoms that include: headaches, feeling overly tired, having trouble breathing, loss of smell, and general congestion.
What Type of Sinusitis Are You Suffering From?
An Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) doctor can determine what is going on in your sinuses and walk you through how to minimize or eliminate your symptoms. Based on your symptoms and the extent of your sinus infection, you may have one of the following forms of sinusitis:
Acute
The least severe and most common form of sinusitis. Acute sinusitis can appear as a cold and comes and goes without returning frequently. An acute sinus infection lasts under three-four weeks.
Recurrent Acute
Suffering from three or more acute sinus infections in a given year is considered recurrent acute sinusitis. If this is the case for you, there is likely an underlying health issue at work.
Chronic
Symptoms persist for over 12-weeks, even up to a year. Chronic sinusitis is not resolved with medication, and you will likely need to see a permanent solution.
Allergic
Sinusitis induced from common allergens.
